The South FIRST FRIDAYS ArtWalk is a self-guided, nighttime tour through galleries, museums, and independent creative businesses September 2nd from 5–9pm.
Street Mrkt urban faire featuring artists, special performances, live music and beer garden on First Friday, September 2nd from 5–10pm out on S. 1st St. in SoFA District.
All ArtWalk venues and Street Mrkt are free admission (spend it with the artists!) and family friendly.

“EMBLEMATA NOVA DE SECRETIS NATURÆ” Travis Lawrence (IL) solo exhibition
Through the art of printmaking, Travis Lawrence creates illustrious allegorical imagery inspired by the mythical and the arcane. Influenced by medieval alchemical manuscripts and illuminations, each symbolic print is an emblem of mystery and metaphor. The viewer is invited to explore the content of these hand-painted prints through a contemplative interaction with the represented archetypes.
About the Artist:
Born and raised in a Midwest religious upbringing, Travis opened his perspective to the interaction with ideas greater than and/or within oneself. He utilizes the art of creation as an act of opening doorways and manifesting these ideas through symbolic narrative. Similar to alchemy, printmaking can be used as a meditative procedure of transforming the mundane into higher states.

“A Sea of Shadows and Reflections” Joseph Loughborough (UK) solo exhibition
It’s been a strange time for everyone. A few of us may have found ourselves with a little more space to contemplate the past and the possibilities of the future a little more assiduously than in previous years. Memories play an important part of this show.
Proudly presented in this new body of work “A Sea of Shadows and Reflections” Loughborough plumbs the depths of his own recollections. From Paris and Berlin to the pubs and ports of the UKs South Coast, the good, the bad and the ugly find themselves personified in these figurative totems. These renderings aim not to be directly representational in nature but instead strive to imbue an impression of a moment or encounter. Having grown up in a port city, Loughborough’s work has always had an affinity with the nautical. The titles of many previous works have often derived from the wrecks and boats left scattered around the creeks and boatyards of Portsmouth. Drawing inspiration from this and iconographic paintings from the early renaissance period he pushes the work into new territories, whilst of course, tipping his cap to the German expressionists.
Continuing the exploration of metallic leaf in his work, he abundantly uses silver in this experimental series. The quietening effect of this cast provokes the pastel and paint to jump from the support. Additionally, its reflective properties change the nature of the work depending on light and surroundings. This playfully mimics the changing character of the sea throughout the day. Its transient ambience also questions the objective value of our own memories and how it can be affected by our immediate location and mood.
About the Artist:
Joseph Loughborough spent his formative years exploring the derelict boatyards and creeks of Portsmouth, on the south coast of the UK. After graduating from Portsmouth University, he pursued interests in art, philosophy and skateboarding culture. Living once again in London after nearly a decade in Paris and Berlin, he works from his studio in Canning Town. “A Sea of Shadows and Reflections” is Loughborough’s 4th solo exhibition with Anno Domini.

Three photographers share their perspectives and styles in an exhibition celebrating the intentional and opportunistic traveler. John Gayler creates compelling imagery guided by the challenges and rewards of exploration, both local and remote. Peter Thoeny takes opportunities for creative composition with his distinctive HDR style to visualize experiences. Pam Perkins demonstrates how to connect with strangers with a visual language, bringing home a viewpoint on human contact from around the globe that few can match.

Opening reception: “The 12:12 Project” International Instant Film Group Exhibit
About 14 years ago, Polaroid stopped making film and cameras. But photographers around the world with a passion for instant cameras continue to make art with them, using the original (but now long expired) film and some new versions that continue to be made.
The 12:12 Project is an international instant film collaborative that has demonstrated since 2013 the continuing creative power of fast-developing analog film. The cast of artists changes a bit each year, but the project remains the same: 24 instant film lovers (and some guest artists) form two teams to each explore 12 themes in 12 months with a goal of pushing the boundaries of the medium.
This exhibition is organized by Cromwell Schubarth, a San Jose-based journalist and photographer who has managed the project since its founder, Nashville-based Penny Felts Colbert, passed away in June 2021.
The show highlights work by Penny and by Cromwell, along with photos from 40 others from four continents who have shot with the project, now and in the past.
“I am a lover of blur, soft colors, dreams and poetry on film. My mother taught me to love cameras, film and drawers full of memories. Polaroid allows me to shoot the way I prefer to see. Gypsy, dreamer, ex-superhero, poet wannabe, starter of projects.” That’s how Penny described herself and her attraction to instant film that inspired The 12:12 Project.

This exhibition highlights gender identity to showcase queer Latinx artists whose work challenges traditional gender norms. The artists offer a perspective on what it means to identify as queer and a reimagined view of the world.
