  Artist’s reception: “Things, Mereology and Schemes,” Leon Ka aka Kafre (Barcelona, Spain) solo exhibition

  Leon Ka / aka Kafre (b. Barcelona, Spain 1980) is a Ph.D. student at Universitat de Barcelona with a dissertation on Metaphysical Relations: Ontological Dependence and Metaphysical
  Implication as well as a street artist that uses his art to make visual these seemingly abstract and esoteric concepts.

  Kafre’s solo exhibition “Things, Mereology and Schemes” is a new body of work focused on three main topics of particular interest to the artist: (1) Things–the distinction between the natural things, non-natural things and the artifacts that occur between them; (2) Mereology–the philosophical and mathematical study of parts and the wholes they form, and (3) Schemes–a scheme consists of a table’s structure, which physical constitution is mainly due to columns, names and variables and the relation between them; used to map out something, or to design the internal of a logical system; the main points of an argument or theory, etcetera.

  Leon Ka (aka Kafre) is a philosopher whose area of research is analytical metaphysics. His career in the visual and graphic arts began in 1991 with graffiti and began to evolve towards his current aesthetic and street art activism as his interest in metaphysics grew. Kafre has had several solo exhibitions in Spain & Germany, as well as featured in group exhibitions in England, Italy, Denmark, Ireland, France, U.S. and Spain. “Things, Mereology and Schemes” at A.D. is Kafre’s first solo exhibit in the U.S.

  Artists’ reception: “You See What I Did There?” new works by John Hageman, Jr.

  “Lately I have been making work with a lot pop culture references. With this show, I wanted to focus on creating more original pieces using my signature color and humor. I have challenged myself in scale and attempted tiny experiments in color. Not that you would notice… or maybe you did. The work before you on the treated dry wall, is a collection of non sequitur thoughts regarding everything from my lack of sleep to a spirited discussion on current affairs.

  Since 2006, I have been making paintings and comic strips as a professional artist. My work has hung in galleries and shops around the Bay Area, Southern California and Sacramento. I have self published a webcomic called Social Vermyn for 7 years and recently, I have had a book published by Slave Labor Graphics of San Jose. Currently, I am doing layout design and coloring for various other comic book projects while working on my own. This year will be my second consecutive appearance at San Diego Comic Con to display my comic book work. I live in Fremont with my incredible wife and three children.

  Artist’s reception: The Light Sculpture of Paul Sable Snibbe

  “Most of my work is internally lit by programmable LED arrays.The inspiration for my work comes both from nature and my meditations. I have tried to duplicate the colors and patterns I see when in silent contemplation.. I have been told by Psychics that I “have the ability to channel divine light through geometric forms,” and believe that my Crystal Obelisks contain a perceivable Higher Presence that many people can feel. “ ~ Paul Sable

  Paul Sable Snibbe was born in New York, where he was classically trained in fine art at the Art Students League, Music and Art High School, the New School and graduated with a BFA from Antioch College. Paul has travelled extensively in Europe and Asia educating himself to the art and architecture of many periods and cultures.

  Paul has been creating kinetic art for over 50 years and has been commissioned by many hospitals and corporate venues to create kinetic acrylic mobiles. In 2014, Paul collaborated with fellow artist Tim Thompson to design and fabricate the appearance of the Space Palette (also displayed here at KALEID) which is one of the most advanced (and fun) interactive art pieces in existence today.

  Paseo Public Prototyping Challenge Survey Pop-Up Event by the SJSU Paseo Prototyping Challenge and Okada Design

  You know your community and the problems it faces better than anyone else. Come share your ideas on ways to make San José a better place to live, work, and play. We want to work with you to shape new and creative solutions to these problems. We will be collecting the public’s thoughts via post-it notes, clipboard surveys, online survey, and audio recordings via SoundCloud (using a tin can phone that hooks up to a cell phone). The thoughts and ideas collected will help San José State University students develop innovative solutions to public issues for the Paseo Public Prototyping Challenge. We will also have a coloring activity for children and cool stickers for survey participants!

  Downstairs Gallery Artist: Lucy Ghelfi

  Art is a visual journal of my search for a deeper meaning of life. I reflect and meditate on the good that is mine and that which I desire for everyone and everything in this world. My life’s purpose is to find joy in all things. I use the degrees of darkness we all experience just because we are human, as my springboard to move into joy and closer to my inner being. My mixed media paintings reflect my perspective of moving from dark into light and the intervallic space in-between.

  Upstairs Gallery: Ink paintings by Jose Eduardo Castro

  “I don’t envision a very long life… I’ve designed it that way.”

  Townes Van Zandt did not request any sympathy, or desire to be rescued in his slow suicide. He designed it that way, revealing an awareness of a voluntary self-destructive lifestyle: the consequence from the absence of a sanctuary.

  Van Zandt’s words compose these frame ink paintings. Each word is illegible because it was written on stationary spinning at the frequency of a vinyl record, 33 revolutions per minute. The combination of text on spinning paper, results in chaotic lines that have no fidelity to organized linguistic structure. Instead, the distorted words read the turns of his life, here embalmed in modest pine.

  Van Zandt embraced his own mortality, awaiting sanctuary in death. His songs captured the blues of exaggerated truths. Mere words, strung across chords, the hymns tailored to the weight of my shoulders. His records are the relics of a canonized bohemian who I fortunately discovered.

  “Two Perspectives in Portraits & Still Life” featuring works by Min Dong, and Joy Cai

  
  

  Min Dong is a painter born in China and currently lives in San Jose. She graduated with a Masters in studio painting from Ukraine National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture with emphasize in oil. She’s a member of the Ukrainian Artists Association and the American Association of Portrait Painting. For this exhibition, she experiments in using oil with acrylic paints. Besides painting, she divides her time as an art teacher in Zhenjiang Sci-Tech University.

  

  Joy Cai is a full-time artist born and raised in China. She studied fine art in Hubei Fine Art Academy and film Art Design at Beijing Film. In 2002 Joy immigrated to the U.S. and currently living in San Jose, CA. She started painting at a very young age. Painting brings her joys and she captures the beautiful light of just ordinary objects that surrounds her. She hopes that her paintings will bring people the same joy that she have had in creating them.

  New exhibition of work by TechShop Resident Artist: Tzong-Lian Tsay, Grace Tsay

  “Overachiever childhood, start-up engineer. Then quit job to wander the globe, to pursue art, and to find the infinite.”

  Tzong-Lian, or Grace Tsay is a mechanical engineer, world traveler, and experimental artist who works in many media, and primarily digital illustration. In this exhibition, as TechShop’s featured resident artist, Tsay will pair vibrant digital illustrations with life casting to depict artful studies of human emotional expression.

  Artists’ Reception: “Abstracts on Paseo de San Antonio” a collection of visually cohesive abstract paintings by Dytko and Laurie Barmore.

  “Intrigued by the form, line, and patterns found in nature and of the story they tell. Not the obvious ones that define an object, but the narrative that portrays the intangible, the veiled, the mysterious. The way, for example, peeling bark tells us not merely about the tree or the nature of bark, but also about revelation, truth telling, and transparency. We see the universality of these designs as a convergence of the physical world and the spiritual; where the physical world provides a window into wisdom, understanding, and truth.” ~ Laurie Barmore

  On view: “Wildlife Beyond Borders, From Beauty to Deeper Understanding”

  “Wildlife Beyond Borders”, a photographic exhibit by nine artists showing their passion for protecting the world’s animals, will open with over 100 images.

  The images show animals in their natural state. The nine artists have spent years photographing animals in many parts of the world to express their deep conviction that animals need to be protected against the onslaught of human activity. The animals are in danger. The images in the exhibition are not only great photographs but also communicate that we need to act to protect them.

  Unless we act, many of these animals will cease to exist and our children, or our children’s children, will never experience the awe of seeing an elephant in the forest or a crane in migration. By portraying horses, polar bears, harp seals, swans, songbirds, African cats, sharks, other marine animals and more, Wildlife Beyond Borders seeks to use the images to encourage us all to act.

  The exhibit started September 2015 at the PhotoCentral Gallery in Hayward, has since traveled to Palo Alto, and been seen by over 3,000 people. A set of new images will be on display at the Art Ark Gallery, showing never seen before: fish eagles, chimpanzees, an underwater mix of “wildlife and landscape”, one of the 15 remaining species of cranes in the world, dreamscape scenes with horses, and the bond between humans and Indian elephants.

  The exhibit has an audio/video feature, known as augmented reality. The viewer points their smartphone at an image and hears the artist deliver a message about their work, their passion, and how they felt when they photographed their subjects. This feature is free to all visitors.

  All images are for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefiting various organizations protecting wildlife.

  Cunamacué, based in Oakland, California, was funded by artistic director Carmen Román. The company promotes the continuity of Afro-Peruvian culture, representing it not as a point in time, but as a living, vibrant and evolving form whose music and dance can be used as a means of expression. FREE dance class from 8–8.30pm (prior to performance at 8.45pm).

  On view: Elissa Nesheim exhibitis her newest owl illustrations. These fun and playful watercolor paintings are full of joy. Previously working exclusively in landscapes, the owls were intended to be a short distraction from painting land and sky. However, these quirky fellows soon took on a life of their own and began showing up in coffee shops, on boats crossing the sea and in yoga studios. Elissa uses ink to outline the shapes and then creates backgrounds and scenery with watercolor paint.
