The South FIRST FRIDAYS art walk is a self-guided, nighttime tour through galleries, museums, and independent creative businesses featuring eclectic art exhibitions and special performances.

  Artist’s reception: “Iridescent” new works by Andrew Irvine

  Andrew Irvine is a ceramic artist and chemist who is inspired by the science behind ceramic materials and processing. In “Iridescent” he showcases his new experimental work with silver and bismuth lustre glazes using a raku fuming process. The refractive and reflective quality of lustre glaze colors result from a nano-layer of metallic crystals formed in the glaze surface during the fuming process, resulting in vibrant, elusive, otherworldly colors that burst to life when viewed in different light sources. These “glaze paintings” are truly emblematic of the modern evolution of ceramic art crossing over into the world of chemistry and material science.

  

  Artist’s Reception: “Orbiter” new paintings by Nicole Linde

  Abstract paintings are a form of meditation for me; they are a way for me to let my energy flow during their creation. They help me to process and transform the chaotic randomness of constant information input into a tranquil abstract world on canvas. I strive to create a language of colors, shapes, symbols, and lines forming movement and rhythms. “Orbiter” is a series of paintings exploring the relationship of my loud outer-self orbiting my quieter inner-self.

  Nicole Linde has been creating in one form or another since she can remember. She loves to paint and has a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. She lives in the South Bay with her husband, two children, and cat.

  8-10pm in the Castellano Playhouse Theater: Gabriel Navia and Sulkary

  Gabriel Navia is one of Bolivia’s most internationally renowned latino artist. As a producer, guitarist, singer and composer, he has collaborated in 2 albums nominated for the Latin Grammys in 2012 and 2013 and is one of the most foremost exponents of Latin music in the Bay Area. Sulkary Valverde is one of the greatest new voices of Cuba. Her voice is deep and soulful — her precision and outstanding ear enable her to easily sing a story. Her improvisational skills will take you on a voyage from Cuba to Africa with a Spanish connection. Fusioning Latin music, flamenco, Cuban, Brazilian, jazz and traditional Bolivian music in a contemporary and personal way, both Gabriel and Sulkary have performed on many stages around the world including Asia, Europe, North and South America.

  Works’ 2016 member exhibition is a broad survey of election-year work from 80 artists. From confronting political issues head-on to escaping them altogether, this non-juried exhibit is set to reveal the conscious and subconscious conscience of our artistic electorate.

  Downtown Yoga Shala presents featured artist Archana Saggar, with her exhibit, “The Spirit of Colors”.

  I see the world in colors. One in which even a seemingly mundane sight can inspire me with the vividness of its color or contrast between the dull and bright. These experiences, both visual and emotional, find their way from within me to my brush in subconscious ways. Here, I share a few of such experiences, each different from the other, yet bound by one common thread- colors.

  New exhibition of work by TechShop Resident Artist: Tzong-Lian Tsay, Grace Tsay

  “Overachiever childhood, start-up engineer. Then quit job to wander the globe, to pursue art, and to find the infinite.”

  Tzong-Lian, or Grace Tsay is a mechanical engineer, world traveler, and experimental artist who works in many media, and primarily digital illustration. In this exhibition, as TechShop’s featured resident artist, Tsay will pair vibrant digital illustrations with life casting to depict artful studies of human emotional expression.

  “A feeling of filling” group exhibition featuring: Sydney Cohen, Sara Emsaki, Megan Reed, Tosha Stimage, Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo, Rachel Weidinger

  “A feeling of filling” encompasses a variety of making styles from collage to text based paintings, culminating in a gorgeously rich body of visual pieces. The artists’ musings are recorded in fabric, paper, color and pattern leaving work that echoes a beautiful and sometimes inarticulable relationship to material and environment.

  On View: “Things, Mereology and Schemes,” Leon Ka aka Kafre (Barcelona, Spain) solo exhibition

  Leon Ka / aka Kafre (b. Barcelona, Spain 1980) is a Ph.D. student at Universitat de Barcelona with a dissertation on Metaphysical Relations: Ontological Dependence and Metaphysical
  Implication as well as a street artist that uses his art to make visual these seemingly abstract and esoteric concepts.

  Kafre’s solo exhibition “Things, Mereology and Schemes” is a new body of work focused on three main topics of particular interest to the artist: (1) Things–the distinction between the natural things, non-natural things and the artifacts that occur between them; (2) Mereology–the philosophical and mathematical study of parts and the wholes they form, and (3) Schemes–a scheme consists of a table’s structure, which physical constitution is mainly due to columns, names and variables and the relation between them; used to map out something, or to design the internal of a logical system; the main points of an argument or theory, etcetera.

  Leon Ka (aka Kafre) is a philosopher whose area of research is analytical metaphysics. His career in the visual and graphic arts began in 1991 with graffiti and began to evolve towards his current aesthetic and street art activism as his interest in metaphysics grew. Kafre has had several solo exhibitions in Spain & Germany, as well as featured in group exhibitions in England, Italy, Denmark, Ireland, France, U.S. and Spain. “Things, Mereology and Schemes” at A.D. is Kafre’s first solo exhibit in the U.S.

  First Fridays is Caffe Frascati Opera Night presented by First Street Singers, with the Bay Area’s finest opera singers performing your very favorite classical arias and duets live in the cafe!   Downstairs Gallery Artist: Lucy Ghelfi

  Art is a visual journal of my search for a deeper meaning of life. I reflect and meditate on the good that is mine and that which I desire for everyone and everything in this world. My life’s purpose is to find joy in all things. I use the degrees of darkness we all experience just because we are human, as my springboard to move into joy and closer to my inner being. My mixed media paintings reflect my perspective of moving from dark into light and the intervallic space in-between.

  “Two Perspectives in Portraits & Still Life” featuring works by Min Dong, and Joy Cai

  
  

  Min Dong is a painter born in China and currently lives in San Jose. She graduated with a Masters in studio painting from Ukraine National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture with emphasize in oil. She’s a member of the Ukrainian Artists Association and the American Association of Portrait Painting. For this exhibition, she experiments in using oil with acrylic paints. Besides painting, she divides her time as an art teacher in Zhenjiang Sci-Tech University.

  

  Joy Cai is a full-time artist born and raised in China. She studied fine art in Hubei Fine Art Academy and film Art Design at Beijing Film. In 2002 Joy immigrated to the U.S. and currently living in San Jose, CA. She started painting at a very young age. Painting brings her joys and she captures the beautiful light of just ordinary objects that surrounds her. She hopes that her paintings will bring people the same joy that she have had in creating them.

The way, for example, peeling bark tells us not merely about the tree or the nature of bark, but also about revelation, truth telling, and transparency.
