NEW EXHIBITS…

  • Anno Domini // the second coming of Art & Design – 366 South First St. map

Opening reception: ASARO Collective (Oaxaca, Mexico)
    featuring music by Sonido Clash

ANNO DOMINI // the second coming of Art & Design is proud to present an exhibit by the courageously vocal Asamblea de Artistas Revolucionarios de Oaxaca (ASARO).

ASARO seeks to create awareness and generate ideas that help consolidate a contemporary ideology current, centered on humanistic values, in order to break the schemes imposed by the system and to generate a society free of alienation through revolutionary art.

Creative capacity is a strategy that historically has been used by the town of Oaxaca to survive and be revitalized. The Asemblea de Artistas Revolucionarios de Oaxaca (ASARO) arises from the need to reject and transcend authoritarian forms of power and institutional culture that has been characterized as discriminatory and dehumanizing, seeking to impose a single version of reality and a morality based on simulacrum.

Against the government’s irrationality of holding itself in power, ASARO seeks to create images that synthesize the critical force that is born from the neighborhoods, the people and the youth.

We believe that public art (various artistic disciplines) is a form of communication that allows dialogue with all sectors of society, and makes possible the visualization of the real conditions of existence, norms and contradictions of the society we live in.

We take the form of assembly because we believe in the possibility of recovery of the community with the power of art, and because the assembly is the form in which the people come together and make decisions on collective interests. ~ASARO

  •  Art Ark Gallery – 1035 South Sixth St. map

Opening reception: An Ear of Grain in Silence Reaped by Nathan Byrne and Centa Schumacher

An Ear of Grain in Silence Reaped is the culmination of Nathan Byrne and Centa Schumacher’s summer residency at the Art Ark Gallery. The show’s title refers to the central epiphany of the Eleusinian Mysteries: a wordless knowledge, once gained, that altered the seeker forever. Drawing from sources that range from Homeric hymns to the film The Neverending Story, the show includes projections, photographic prints, and 16-foot tall soft sculptures. At the center of the gallery is an immersive structure where viewers enter and are bathed in an otherworldly light.

Art is Life and Only Life. A Gianfranco Paolozzi Retrospective

KALEID gallery is very proud to present this 40 year retrospective of art work by resident gallery artist Gianfranco Paolozzi. Please join us at 7:30pm for a tour of the show led by Gianfranco and a live performance by the Paolozzi Tango Trio.

Gianfranco was born in a small Italian village in 1952. He has always been an artist and musician; he remembers drawing and creating art from as early as preschool and received his prized accordion at the age of 9 (which he continues to play while performing with his Paolozzi Tango Trio).

As a young man in the 60’s, he sold two oil paintings to pay for a vacation around Italy with friends. It was then he started experimenting with photography. After completing his Italian military duty of service; he followed the love of his life to America in 1972, married her and now have 3 grown children. The 80’s were full of art shows throughout Silicon Valley and the decade in which his first piece of the “Collagements” series was born (using photographs on plexiglass). The 90’s brought several solo shows for Gianfranco which led to a greater expansion of his presence in San Jose’s illustrious art and music scene. Presently, he continues to be prolific with his “Journals” series and has officially switched the titles of all his art pieces, past and present, to “Journals” because they are forever evolving until they are sold.

    Familiar Space…..
by Marisol Picazo & Robbie Lopez

Robbie and Mari explore various environments and subjects in their work. Both have acquired a passion for exploring and documenting, utilizing the camera as a tool to engage in visual storytelling. Both of their work is inspired by memories from their past, travels and people they interact with. In this exhibit, Robbie exhibits a selection of works captured on the road within the United States. Mari exhibits selected works of one of her favorites places to shoot, San Francisco. She exhibits selected images of Chinatown and its surrounding areas. Both prefer to shoot with their film cameras because it slows down the process of being present and pushes them to be more selective when it comes to creating an image. All images shot with 120mm and 35mm film.
Exhibition produced by guest curator Robertino Ragazza.

OUR HEAVEN is the unification of Asian & Pacific mixed-media artists. It incorporates the concept of 天下(tiānxià/tien-hsia), which means ‘Under Heaven,’ the ideology was meant to unify all nations as one under heaven. OUR HEAVEN is intended to provide a space and bring visibility to Asian artists in the Bay Area and to dismantle the Eurocentric perspective of the western art space.

We would also like to emphasize that East Asian privilege exists and tends to saturate “Asianness” and cause erasure of mixed, South, South East, West, Central, and Pacific Asians. Asian culture is not a monolith! We will not tolerate this in our space. Please prioritize multiethnic/, brown, black, and Latinx -/Asian bodies here. We witness you, and this is for you.

    Art by Miguel Machuca

I am glad I have the opportunity to display some old and current work. It’s a collection of different pieces and styles, stages in my life. At the same time, displaying few finished framed drawing concepts of future works and ideas that will most likely be larger pieces.

The mixed media work “ The masks” are pieces I created inspired by my Mexican heritage. From stacking frames to silk roses and flowers, colorful palette of traditional influences. It was another way to express the admiration I have for Frida Kahlo, one of Mexico’s greatest artist. I feel I succeeded embodying her spirit into the work.

My inspirations for my abstract work is “life” as it unfolds. Coming from a live art painting perspective and style at local art shows in San Jose and Bay Area. This was a great way to learn to lose myself in the sounds and movements of my environment. Plus it also taught me to push the envelope and to become one with the experience and the interaction with the public’s questions making the experience much more meaningful.

My Cubism is no other then my Soul taking shape in many forms. Life is movement, it never stops expanding , never really stops just takes form into another shape and so on. Sometimes it’s as easy as explaining that it becomes” Me “ transforming into geometrical forms. I like to believe that my connection to the universe sparks these visions. The feeling of balance becomes easier to embrace. Most of the time I let the lines and points of each piece lead me without questioning this flow and to only attempt to understand the “why” it took me there. Once I step back and gaze into the work, i realize its meaning and what represents in my life. This is a way my Artwork talks to me, like a silent conversation between the self and the inner self.

My Drawing concepts are a collection of ideas and influences and inspirations from sacred geometry, astrology, alchemy, spirituality, nature, the unconsciousness, religion, ancient beliefs and dreams. These will be larger scale pieces to the body of work for my first solo exhibition at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara from September 1, 2018 – November 11, 2018. The body of work speaks of the awareness from the self and the liberation of conditioned thoughts from our society into full free thoughts of the inner self connecting to a greater picture. “We all are one and one is all of us”, as well as everything that surrounds us, a humble visual explanation of painful experiences and the strengthening and embrace to it all. ~ Miguel Machuca

  • Studio Climbing Gym – 396 South First St. map

    Urbanization by Peter Edwards

This series of mono and relief prints explore the juxtaposition between urbanization and how it affects the natural world. It is a colorful yet dark depiction of the rise or ‘growth’ of the wants and needs of a technologically advancing society and the impact it has on our world.

  • TechShop San Jose – 38 South Second St. map

“Blue Collar Leisure” by Ryan Carrington

This show is the culmination of a three-month artist-in-residency where Carrington, who teaches sculpture courses at Santa Clara University, learned how to use the computer controlled machines at the Tech Shop to create a sculptural body of work revolving around the class structure in America, and the shift in public perspective of blue and white collar workers in this country.

  • Caffé Frascati – 315 South First St. map

    Reclaimed by Elba Raquel Martinez

This body of work is part of a series exploring the ties between nature, artist, and colors. Each color symbolizes important events in my life, which coincide with a hair wrap I have been color coding in my own hair for the past four years. As life experiences shape the person, art and color begin to shift for the artist in a transformation of concept and style. The original series titled “Life Strings” keeps expanding with this 13th piece as the reclaiming of this sculptural art form of branches and yarn.

Elba Raquel was born and raised in San Jose. She graduated in 2005 from Evergreen Valley College with an AS in Design. Immediately following she moved to “The City” to study at the San Francisco Academy of Art University where she graduated in 2008 with a BFA in Illustration. Currently she runs the art department at Latino College Preparatory Academy and is pursuing her Master’s in Art Education at Santa Clara University. She is an active free lance illustrator and exhibiting artist in San Jose. As a 2-D and 3-D artist, Elba Raquel blends both realms in a playful manner. Her Mexican cultural influence reflects in her pieces through rhythm and color into what can be described as “fantastic realism.”

First Fridays is Caffe Frascati Opera Night presented by First Street Singers, with the Bay Area’s finest opera singers performing your very favorite classical arias and duets live in the cafe! for the South FIRST FRIDAYS Art Walk.
