  Scavengers and Cannibals new works by Julie Bilyeu

  We are all Scavengers and Cannibals in some way or another. Some are self-inflicting cannibals by ignoring their own integrity, and others by openly having no compassion or integrity thus becoming metaphorical cannibals–eating their own to get ahead. Scavengers seem to be more on the benevolent side of the human condition, only eating the dead or discarded, never taking more than they need, living day to day. ~Julie Bilyeu

  Julie Barrett Bilyeu was borne and raised in the bay area, a graduate of California State University Chico with a BA degree in Drawing and Ceramics (1999). Charcoal, Dry-Pastel, Graphite are her primary mediums with some exploration into mixed media and cutting edge hanging techniques.

  
  

  People and Places wearable art by Mariya Milovidova

  In her second feature exhibition at KALEID Gallery, Mariya Milovidova presents her wearable art collection entitled People and Places. This collection mainly consists of silk scarves and dresses recently shown during the Fashion Weeks in New York, Paris, and San Francisco. Mariya’s collection was influenced by her latest experiences in the Bay Area art and fashion industries over the past year as well as her travels to Las Vegas, New Orleans, New York and Paris.

  Mariya Milovidova was born in Odessa,the beautiful city in Ukraine by the Black Sea where she attended Greckov Art School studying the techniques of old school European masters. Currently she resides in the San Francisco Bay Area where she graduated from San Jose State University with a Bachelors in Art & Textile Deign. Mariya specializes in one of a kind wearable art as well as traditional media such as drawing and painting on paper and canvas. She has participated in numerous fashion and art shows all over the Bay Area some of which include a De Young Museum Fashion Exhibit dedicated to Jean Paul Gautier and San Francisco Fashion Week. She currently works with private clients and boutiques.

  Full Bellies And Empty Calories by Sean Boyles

  First Friday, November 7th at Seeing Things Gallery Sean Boyles is having a solo show called Full Bellies And Empty Calories. This will be the last appearance of The Cyclorilla for awhile. His last home burned to the ground, so he tried to cheer himself up on ice creams, but it gave him countless brain freezes, brought on sugar highs, and sluggish lows resulting in food comas. Come to the show and see scenes from his heroic past, like the time he wrestled Steve Caballero’s Cab Dragon, and gaze at the ice cold sugary treats that slowed him down.

  The More the Merrier V Salon-Style Art Exhibition

  This year’s show will feature the work of 50 bay area artists working in variety of mediums and styles. In the tradition of the French salon-stye exhibition design, participating artists are encouraged to install as much art as they can within their allocated space. The gallery will be packed with art to dazzle the eyes and stimulate the senses. The majority of artwork on display will be priced under $200 and art may be purchased directly off the walls on the evening of the art openings. Come to see the art, meet the artists, mingle with friends and family, listen to live music performed by Thomas Howell on violin and enjoy the food, fun and festive atmosphere!

• The Citadel Art Gallery – 199 Martha St. map

  Join Bay Area artists Sonya Kleshik and Kris Patton in their show at the Citadel Gallery, the opening will be on Friday, November 7 from 6-10pm, with refreshments served and tropical beats by DJ Mr. Fabbulus.

  Theirs is an exploration of art as healing and self-expression. While art’s therapeutic power has long been known, it is often seen as a somber and even painful pursuit. This show celebrates the creative process not only as one of healing and empowerment, but also of joy, exploration and adventure. Once started, the creative process takes on a life of its own and it is this mystery that makes for an exciting creative journey. With subject matter ranging from still life to portraits to abstract, come enjoy the diverse play of color and form.

  Sonya Kleshik’s mission is to empower and connect people through art. Building on her experiences living and working domestically and abroad on human rights, development and conflict issues, in 2014 she heeded a pull back towards creativity after many years away. Returning to California, she embarked on a spiritual journey and rediscovered her passion for painting. Deeply convinced of art’s ability to heal, Sonya now wishes to share this gift with others, ultimately combining art with issues of sustainability and spirituality, and bringing it to the field of international development.

  No Zen Intended solo exhibition by Kevin Tschaen

  Art is non-representational, sometimes abstract, and very much musically influenced. My works on paper explore fluid, melting shapes juxtaposed with sharp and rigid brush strokes–much like the ebb and flow of jazz. Visions in spaces large and small, most of the work is purely gestural–a natural and raw flow from feeling to paper. With vivid colors that jump from the page and then continue to blend and layer, these pieces are alive and vibrating with energy and movement. Take it as you see it, feel it, dream it.

  Landscapes, Dreamscapes and Girlscapes solo exhibition by Joseph Demaree

  A collection of Plein Air Landscapes, Studio Dreamscapes, and Girls released and captured from Joseph’s imagination. This collection of oil paintings was created along off beat paths in Torrey Pines CA, Encinitas CA, Hollywood CA, San Jose CA, Ranchita CA and Portland OR. His paintings are full of dripping textures and vibrant colors. His love of surrealism and natural beauty continue to influence the dreamers perspective. Originally from San Jose CA and Schooled in the Bay Area (Willow Glen High, Lincoln High, SF Academy of Art) Demaree has continued to sharpen his artistic skills inside and outside of painting. His latest album “The Alternative Underground” with The Square Tires, is soon to be released on his own label Idiomism. Demaree is currently living in the Foothills of CA after another stint in Portland OR. He will be moving to Maui HI where he will be painting Plein Air Landscapes and continue his studio work as well as his musical endeavors.

  Artist of the month: Tana Hart, Teezhandsuds

  Tana Hart lives in the Santa Cruz mountains and started making soap about 14 years ago. While working as a private nanny for a family with two children in Los Gatos, she bought a melt and pour soap kit at the local craft store for the kids. Hooked on her new craft, she got a seller’s permit and Teezhandsuds was born. She soon ventured out and started making all kinds of bath products and selling them on the weekends at local farmer’s markets. Eventually, she quit her job and created a website. The rest, as they say, is history. Today, she pours 150-250 bars each week and has her products in several south bay stores, including Discover San Jose.

  Back from the Jazz Festival by popular demand, this Passionate, High-energy, gypsy soul-fire acoustic ensemble takes listeners on an exotic scintillating journey of sensual grooves and wild crescendos you can’t help but move to. Their masterfully rich instrumentation is both complex and precise, gritty and hot. The Samurai Gypsies get their unforgettable sound from the band’s core string virtuosos, Gary Carpenter on guitar and Dany Cobo on violin. Taking music with African, flamenco, Latin, and jazz roots into some deliciously sexy and cerebral places.

  Come and meet Peter Naranjo Jr., owner of All Honey Apiary. He has been a bee keeper since 2009. Together with his son Nicolo S Naranjo, they collect and harvest 100% raw honeys. “The Beautiful taste of Honey is Like Wine Tasting,” Peter says. “Honeys come straight from the flowers which is what makes and gives each flavor its unique taste.” Come and sample some of the raw mono-floral honeys that they offer, including Orange Blossom, Black Berry,Wild Flower, Infused Lavender, flavored honey sticks and their award-winning Black Sage. It couldn’t be sweeter!

  Jonathan and Joella Kermit are back at the Downtown Yoga Shala Gallery with their fifth joint show. Joella has been experimenting with plant materials to dye and make botanical impressions on silk scarves while Jonathan continues his work with recycled wire and laminated paper.

  Oboist, Glenda Bates

  Glenda Bates is a multi-faceted musician, performer, and teacher whose specialties include orchestral repertoire, jazz, historical performance, chamber music, and contemporary classical works for oboe and English horn. An advocate of “right now” music, Glenda has premiered over a dozen works by living composers, including Peter Winkler, Perry Goldstein, Robert Gibson, Daria Semegen, Andrew Conklin, Tomek Regulski, Richard Dubras, and more. She is an adjunct professor at Pacific Union College and is a doctoral candidate at Stony Brook University. She resides in San Francisco, California.

  This is a music and art event to benefit Action for Children Zambia. All proceeds will go directly to funding educational opportunities for orphan and street children in Zambia, Africa.   H2Ography: Undersea Images by Dave Conner

  Dave started taking photos underwater almost as soon as he began his dive career a short 15 years ago. Rapidly advancing to the ranks of a dive professional, Dave occasionally works as a Divemaster for a charter dive boat in Monterey Ca where he enjoys working with other divers and in general being an ambassador for the sport sharing his love and enthusiasm of it with all he comes in contact with. His true love underwater, however has always been in photography. What started as a vehicle for “Show and Tell” of his adventures to friends who weren’t involved in diving rapidly progressed to an all out effort to improve his skills and find the perfect shot (for which he’s still looking).

  Art featured at TechShop San Jose this November will be a collaborative piece created by the community of TechShop. TechShop Members have been invited to add to a collaborative mosaic where they will be able to express their experience at TechShop, what they have learned at TechShop, or even just something cool that they make at TechShop. Their work will highlight the experience of making and what it means to create in our space. The finished piece will be multimedia, and will be added to TechShop San Jose’s permanent collection upon completion.

• Anno Domini // the second coming of Art & Design – 366 South First St. map

  

  On view in galleryONE: In the Cave We Dance Joseph Loughborough (UK) solo exhibition

  Emerging from his studio, Joseph Loughborough proudly presents his latest body of work In the Cave We Dance, his second solo exhibition with Anno Domini Gallery. This title conjures the image of Dionysian human forms in darkness, perhaps circling and lurching around a fire or light of some kind. These new artworks echo and distort these visions of a primal gathering with a twist from a more recent episode of art history. Joseph draws upon iconography and themes evocative of the decadent period of Berlin (particularly theatre and film of the 1920’s) as a vehicle to explore Plato’s Allegory of the Cave in which our subjective perception of reality is questioned.

  The rendering of the pieces fluctuates between expressive mark making and a critical layering of gold leaf into flat geometrical compositions. The gold mirrors the embers of the blaze whilst charcoal functions as a perfect opposite to encapsulate and enhance the metallic glint. Gold is often regarded as an opulent colour, an over indulgence whereas charcoal is perhaps one of the humblest of artists materials. Aesthetically, black and gold complement each other as values of the unknown and illumination, adding to the dichotomy of this juxtaposition. They are used on an ambitious scale in this series which delves into the catacombs of the human condition.

  Joseph Loughborough (b. 1981) spent his formative years exploring the derelict boatyards and creeks of Portsmouth, on the south coast of the UK. After graduating from Portsmouth University he pursued interests in art, philosophy and skateboarding culture, living in London, Paris and currently Berlin.

  

  On view in galleryTWO: The Bride Series by Cake (Brooklyn, NY) solo exhibition

  Jennifer Caviola, aka “Cake” is a fine artist that focuses on public space as platform to express her support of all women with a voice of solidarity. Communicating through portraiture, women’s curves become sharp lines that in an architectural sense, propel a feeling of strength, power and vulnerability. This particular volume of paintings: The Bride Series, is a result of a lost marriage, which left her wondering who she was and what she could do to reclaim herself. Cake painted every day into the night for five months straight until the series was finished, and each Bride carried her closer to a healed heart.

  Caviola has a BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute and a MFA in Fine Arts from the Parsons School of Design. She has been featured in the Huffington Post, Complex Magazine, Vogue and High Fructose Mag just to name a few. She was recently featured at a recent panel discussion on Street Art at The Brooklyn Museum for her mural in the Bowery that she made in conjunction with FAB NYC and Many Project. The artist resides and works in Brooklyn, New York.

  The Public is Personal and Benefit Auction Preview

  Alexanna Alvarado, Karen Haas, and Alayne Yellum explore ways in which psychological and social relationships affect how individuals conduct themselves in public. This exhibition is the result of three San José artists having chosen to explore this issue in different media—photography and text, watercolor on paper, and oil paintings.

  First Friday November 7th will include a preview of work in the Benefit Art Auction to be held mid-December.

  Karolina Sobecka// The Cloud Collection

  The Cloud Collection is an exhibition featuring three ongoing projects by Brooklyn-based artist Karolina Sobecka that explore connections between clouds and information technology by combining scientific information with more whimsical and experiential approaches. In August 2013, Sobecka launched a weather balloon from the eastern hills of San Jose that floated to an elevation of 55,000 feet. Come see video and photographic documentation of its journey, while exploring projects such as Cloud Machine, a personal device for weather modification, the Cloud Collector, a device for collecting cloud moisture, and CloudServices, a proposal for using the atmospheric clouds and the microorganisms in them as the material for data transfer and storage.

  “The use of technology to create visual art today has raised the bar for artists working with traditional media. A good digital artist can create images and videos to stimulate the senses in ways those working with the traditional mediums can only dream. As such, we are challenged to create static images that are not easily replicated using technology, to not copy reality, but still solicits and toys with an individual’s eye and thoughts, perhaps stimulating the imagination or stirring an emotion.”
