As material objects these textiles play an important role in all of our life passages, either as utilitarian objects, or as ceremonial and symbolic pieces.

Indigo dyed cotton, silk embroidery, applique, and metallic ribbonThreads of Love: Baby Carriers from China’s Minority Nationalities, presents the rich folk art tradition of hand-embroidered baby carriers from the minority nationalities of southwestern China. The exhibit highlights the symbolic decorations traditionally used to embellish these otherwise utilitarian, though lovingly made textiles. Auspicious symbols connote good luck, good fortune, happy marriage, and longevity. This selection of baby carriers is drawn from the Miao (known as Hmong in their native language), Zhuang, Yao, and Shui nationalities from China’s southwestern provinces of Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi, They are on loan from the private collection of Mr. Yu Yawan, of Nanning, China.

Freya Seeburger
Since moving to San Jose, California in 2010, Freya Seeburger has started a busy career in both classical ensembles and rock bands. In 2011 Freya began backing singer/songwriter Maryam Qudus of Doe Eye, playing on San Francisco’s Live 105 premier of Qudus’ album “Run, Run, Run” for their Soundcheck series. In May 2012, Freya played at the Joint in Las Vegas, when Doe Eye was selected as a competitor in Billboard’s Battle of the Bands. Freya has recorded with producer John Vanderslice and the Magik*Magik Orchestra and she was also featured on the album “All My Love in Half Light” by San Jose musician, Lady Lazarus, whose album was given a 7.8 review by Pitchfork.com. This past year, Freya began coursework at San Francisco State University for the Masters Program in Cello Performance, studying with Alexander Walsh-Wilson of the Alexander String Quartet. Freya plays an 1885 Czech cello as well as a Luis & Clarke carbon fiber cello.

Everyone has there reasons for leaving San Jose, but if and when you do leave, more than likely San Jose will never leave you. If you knew them when they were here, then you will not be surprised (or maybe you will) to see that they have become these impressive artists each in there own right. Cooperative Gaming Coop: Arcade Cabinet Maker meets Video Game Maker by James Morgan and John Bruneau
The Cooperative Gaming Coop looks both backwards and forwards, into the legacy of gaming and its possible future. The Golden Age of Video Games provided us with this public social space in which to interact, debate, commune and compete with friends and strangers alike. Come learn how the arcade cabinet became the interface, the context, and the marketing agent for the games contained within it. Explore these curated cabinets that bring together interesting works from a variety of sources including the Game Developers Club from SJSU. Learn about the tools used to build the arcade cabinets and play some fun quirky games. Additionally we invite people of all ages to visit the “Coop Swap” where you can trade games, both old and new, bring the games you made to trade, and even those old much loved titles. Engage your neighbors, share stories.

Downtown Yoga Shala – 450 South First St. map
The exhibit at the Downtown Yoga Shala this month represents a collaboration between Schallenberger School and the Montalvo Arts Center. The fourth grade students of Binh Le Hererra, Jessica Martin-Moss, Ursula Goodwin and Kim Cox have been working with artist Claudia Stevens of Montalvo exploring a variety of media including ceramics and painting. In addition to studying various drawing, painting and ceramic techniques they have tried their hands at imitating the style of various artists including Georgia O’Keeffe. The students are pleased to share the fruits of this collaboration with the public. -

Nak Bou is a graphic and multi-media artist based in Southern California. He is a graduate of UCLA’s Design I Media Arts program. A multidisciplinary artist working with graphics to motion, from web and branding to illustrative drawings. In addition to his work as a graphic designer, he is currently working on art that combines themes of nostalgia, historical events, and modern urban life.

The Studio Rock Gym presents an exhibition by Ajay Fay, a commercial photographer and fine artist.
The exhibition includes a body of work that Fay shot while traveling for jobs along the west coast. They are landscapes, and they are the first reason Fay started photography. After going to school and receiving a BFA in Photography, Fay realized he wanted to work with people and explore ways of communication. Forcing people to see differently. The other set of images on view are from a series called somewhere between here and there, personal work about Fay’s struggle to find his place in the race that is life here in the city..

Rare Candy: A Pokemon Gallery for Charity
San Jose State University art students Peter Le and Amy Kim had a small idea to create a fun art gallery to the original 151 Pokemon that that had grown up with. After some time and with the help of many friends in the Animation and Illustration program at SJSU, the small idea turned into a much bigger endeavor. The exhibition is also a charitable auction where 100% of the proceeds will be given to “Canines for Disabled Kids” , a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of deaf and physically disabled children by partnering them up trained service dogs. All Pokemon were assigned randomly to participating artists and all will be auctioned off through a silent bid process until May 17th on location at Umpqua Bank in downtown San Jose during normal business hours. Live music by Super Soul Bros.
